This layout was such a pleasure to create. I had a few 49 and Market embellishments left on my craft table from an earlier project, so I chose a photo whose colours complemented the embellishment colours. I also found the perfect frame for the square photo: I absolutely love the machine-stitched edges—they add just the right amount of texture and detail to the project.
If I had used the dark brown patterned paper as a full background, the overall look might have felt a little too dark. Instead, I trimmed it down and mounted it onto a sheet of white cardstock. That simple change immediately made the layout feel brighter and lighter.
To add a little dimension, I raised some of the embellishments off the background using foam adhesive. I then arranged them into three layered clusters around the photo. I often work with an odd number of focal points because I think it creates a more balanced and visually pleasing design. Maybe you have noticed that this is a design principle I often return to.
Chipboard embellishments often have a white border around the design. Sometimes it suits the style of a project, but more often than not I'd rather use embellishments without a border. That's one of the reasons I love these laser-cut elements: Even though they're full of details, they don't have a white outline, which gives them a nice natural look.
I have to admit that I'm still learning the techniques of creating beautiful embellishment clusters, but I can definitely see myself improving with every layout. I really admire scrapbookers who mastered layered clusters, such as the incredibly multi-talented Vicky Papaioannou and Terhi Koskinen, whose colourful layouts are always very inspiring.
I love the way clustered embellishments enhance a scrapbook page. They make it possible to leave plenty of empty space and keep the design feeling light and airy, while still creating a richly layered and visually interesting layout.
When I build layered, dimensional elements on a layout, I do make sure the page doesn't become too bulky. This is where my Scandinavian sense of practicality comes into play! 😊 I store my layouts in 12" albums inside page protectors, so it's important that they slide in easily without having to force them into the pockets.
