@CHA Part I: California Greetings - Terveiset Kaliforniasta

Hi!
Throughout my active crafting years I have felt that January has been a special month of the year. Right after new year all manufacturers are posting their sneak peek photos of new product releases, and towards the end of the month blogs are filled with inspirational reports from the CHA Craft show. Those articles have given a great overview of what's 'in', and stories about new tools, materials, techniques, and colors have been a true source for inspiration. However, traveling from Finland to California for a craft show has been a dream I did not think could ever become real. But dreams are meant to be chased. And this January mine become true.

Hei!
CHA on amerikkalaisen Craft and Hobby Associationin järjestämä monipäiväinen askartelu- ja käsityömessutapahtuma. Vuoden päätapahtuma järjestetään tammikuussa, jolloin messuilla saa hyvän yleiskäsityksen siitä, mistä askartelumaailmassa alkaneena vuonna puhutaan, eli mitkä ovat kiinnostavimmat askartelijan uudet työvälineet, materiaalit, värit ja tekniikat. Vaikka askarteluaiheisia ulkomaanmatkoja takana olikin, tuntui ajatus Kaliforniaan suuntautuvasta askartelumessumatkasta varsin kaukaiselta haaveelta. Mutta "vain unelmat saavat unelmat toteutumaan". Ja omani toteutui tammikuussa.

The best thing about the trip was to have Minna as my travel companion. We have traveled quite many times together, and our tiny team just rocks. Every time. And this one was no exception.
We set just a few basic goals for our journey: To participate in interesting classes, to network with manufacturers and designers and promote our papercrafting magazine 'Paperilla', to get inspired about the show, and to have a great vacation. Do I even have to say that the goals were met? :)

One could think that flying from Helsinki to LA is super expensive. It's not. We got a very nice deal through London (British Airways + Virgin Atlantic) for EUR 600. The London connection was just perfect: No changing terminals nor spending hours on the airport waiting for the connecting flight. We had just a bit over two hours at Heathrow which was just enough to walk through security and get to the plane. Perfect.

Voisi kuvitella, että matkustaminen Helsingistä Los Angelesiin on huippukallista. Ei välttämättä. Läysimme mukavan lentolipputarjouksen Helsinki - Lontoo - LA (British Airways - Virgin Atlantic), jolloin meno-paluun hinnaksi tuli noin 600 euroa. Aikataulut olivat varsin optimaaliset, ja jatkolennolle siirtyminen sujui Heathrow:ssa todella hienosti ilman terminaalin vaihtoa tai ylimääräisiä odotteluja.

Before heading to Anaheim and CHA we spent two days in Los Angeles. Our hotel was quite close to the LAX airport, but with our rental car it was easy to do some sightseeing in Hollywood. Even though I had traveled several times to US I had never sat behind the steering wheel. Our decision to upgrade our prebooked rental car to a nice SUV proved to be a good one. Driving a nice big car, and getting all our luggage in the car without issues was just great.
Regardless of the time of the day there's always lots of traffic on the streets of LA. However, navigating was way easier than I had thought as all the exits and street names are marked clearly, and after getting used to the hectic traffic, driving was a real pleasure. Having our own car for the week gave us the freedom we wanted, and the opportunity to visit places without careful preplanning.

In Hollywood we decided do be good tourists and do some guided sightseeing. A hop on-hop off tour bus took us around Los Angeles and it was interesting to hear background stories about the places we viewed from the bus. Sometimes I felt like I had to pinch myself: Was I really in there? Was I really seeing all those places I knew from TV and movies? Amazing :)

Hollywoodissa päätimme tutustua paikkoihin myös opastetulla kiertoajelulla. Itse tykkään vieraassa kaupungissa hypätä jonkin kiertoajelubussin kyytiin, jolloin nähdyistä paikoista kuulee paljon mielenkiintoisia tarinoita, ja kierelystä saa enemmän irti. Lokoisaan lomatyyliin valitsimme kiertoajeluumme hop on - hop off -bussin, josta saattoi hypätä pois kyydistä, kun siltä tuntui.

We had not planned to visit any tourist attractions like Universal Studios nor Disneyland. Our vacation was simply too short for those. We knew that for really being able to see those places you'd have to spend the whole day there and we did not have that many extra days. Universal Studios we viewed from outside, but were just as happy to spend the evening at Universal Studios City walk, enjoying the neon lights, loud music, and a nice dinner at Hard Rock Cafe.
In Anaheim, Disneyland was located just across the street from our hotel. The area was surrounded by a tall fence and palm trees, so the only thing we could see from our hotel room window was the upper parts of the ferris wheel and roller coaster. But we were not too sorry for not going there. You need to leave something for the next visit, right!?!

Anaheimissa Disneyland sijaitsi aivan hotellimme vieressä, tien toisella puolella.

In the beginning of our vacation the weather was warm but not too hot. The afternoon high temperatures were somewhere round +17C, and the mornings were cold. Towards the end the hot winds started to blow from the Pacific and it was really great to walk around in shorts and T-shirts. The last few days were really hot, with temperatures rising even over +30C. During our stay we heard news from back home that Southern Finland got finally snow, and the temperatures dropped close to -20C. Reading such Fb updates, sitting by a hot sunny beach, zipping margaritas, felt quite unreal. :)

Jotenkin tuli halu pysäyttää ajankulku ainakin hetkeksi juuri siihen paikkaan :)

In addition to the CHA craft show we had time to do some shopping. I did not go crazy in the shops, but yet got myself some cloths, sneakers, a handbag, and some crafting supplies. In addition to those we had to bring home our CHA workshop creations, and some of them were not too small! Soon I realized that I would not be able to fit everything in my single suitcase, so we had no other option than go suitcase shopping :) When heading home I was really happy at LAX when the Virgin Atlantic check-in officer suggested that I should transfer some items from my smaller bag to the larger, and that he would let me hand carry it for free! So no extra charge for that crazy amount of luggage! Thank you Virgin Atlantic!

Kiitos Virgin Atlantic! :)

After CHA show we headed to a short drive in Hollywood area and then further to Santa Monica where we spent the two last days of our vacation. Clearly it was off season, as you did not see that many tourists in the city centre, and even the huge beach was nearly empty. We spent one sunny morning enjoying the sun and walking on the beach. We looked at the sea and saw a group of seven dolphins swimming by. What an experience!
Our journey was a great combination of sun and warm weather, meeting good friends, making new ones, getting inspired by new crafting goodies, enjoying good food, relaxing, and doing some nice shopping. Discussions with our new contacts will continue and I truly hope our CHA visit will bring good things for both our Paperilla design team and our readers. Ten hour time difference made me feel really jet lagged for over a week, and being one of the ones catching a bad CHA cold did not make getting back to normal daily routines easy.

:(

More stories about the CHA show will follow shortly so stay tooned. I hope these sunny photos have brightened your day :)

3rd Eye & Studio 75 week: Love

3rd Eye and Studio 75 inspiration week continues! Every day bloggers from both design teams have revealed great projects for your inspiration. I hope you have enjoyed them!

For this layout I chose products from Rosalie in the Garden collection by Studio 75. The soft colors, rose images, and beautiful patterns truly inspired me. As background I chose the light brick wall pattern and decorated it a bit further with gesso, watercolors, and stamps:

Tähän leiskaan valitsin tuotteita Studio 75:n Rosalie in the Garden -sarjasta. Pidin kovasti sarjan papereiden pehmeistä värisävyistä, ruusukuvioista ja kauniista tekstuuripinnoista. Taustaan valitsin vaalean tiiliseinäkuvion, jota tuunailin mieleisekseni gessolla, vesiväreillä ja leimasimilla:

Scrapbook layout background

I decorated the page with stamped and heat embossed feathers, fussy cut roses, die-cut branches, and small seed beads. What a fun project to make!

Koristelin sivun metallinhohtoisella jauheella kohokuvioiduilla, leimatuilla höyhenillä, kuviopaperista leikatuilla ruusuilla, stanssatuilla lehdillä ja pienillä siemenhelmillä. Miten mukava tätä leiskaa oli tehdä!

Scrapbook layout, for 3rd Eye and 75 Studio week

Scrapbook layout, close-up

Before attaching the roses with 3d foam stickers I pressed them over a mouse pad with a stylus.

The leafs were die-cut from thin craft canvas; a material that was really nice and easy to work with. As die I used the new Garden Greens Bigz die from Sizzix. This versatile die will be in heavy use!

Stanssi on Sizzixin uutuustuote, Garden Greens. Tämä monikäyttöinen stanssi tulee olemaan varmasti kovassa käytössä!

DT Inspired Blueprints: Villa Villekulla

Hello all,
Earlier this month I was very happy to hear that Inspired Blueprints has made some great changes regarding the sketch challenges. First of all, the reveal day for new sketches is now Tuesday instead of Friday. If you are a weekend scrapper you now have plenty of time to plan your layout and to print your photos during the weekdays and then start scrapping when the weekend begins. In addition, the layouts are no longer posted to the IB community which many of you found a bit tricky to use. As people were tagging their layouts differently it was difficult to get an overview of all entries to a specific sketch. Now we only use the Inspired Blueprints blog and all entries are linked directly under the challenge post. The entry links and thumbnails are now pointing directly to participants' blogs which makes it easier for all of us to visit each others blogs. And to leave comments as we all love comments, don't we!

Mukavaa viikonloppua sinulle,
Aiemmin tässä kuussa sain ilokseni kuulla, että Inspired Blueprints -haastesivusto tekee merkittäviä muutoksia toimintamalliinsa. Uusien haasteiden julkaisupäivä siirtyi perjantailta tiistaille, ja hieman hankalakäyttöisen IB-yhteisön käytöstä luovuttiin kokonaan. Yhteisössä oli hankala saada kokonaiskuvaa yhteen haasteeseen osallistuneista töistä, sillä moni osallistuja merkitsi töitään hieman eri tavoin. Nyt haasteeseen osallistutaan linkittämällä työ haastepostauksen loppuun. Näin helpotetaan myös vierailuja osallistujien blogeissa, sillä linkit vievät suoraan osallistujan omaan blogiin. Hienoa!

This layout was done in the beginning of January, just before heading to CHA. Sketch challenge #117 has closed, but I'm sure #118 will get your creative juices flowing. Especially if you love Instagram sized photos :)

Sketch no. 117 / Mallipiirros nro  117:

... and my take on it:

... ja minun tulkintani siitä:

The photos were taken last summer when we were on a family vacation in Stockholm, Sweden. We spent one day in Junibacken, a fantasy play house showcasing all dear storybook characters by Astrid Lindgren. Our journey ended at 'Villa Villekulla', the house of the strongest girl in the world, Pippi Longstocking. My kids loved playing in her house!

Leiskan kuvat ovat viime kesältä, jolloin vietimme kesälomaa Tukholmassa. Yksi lomapäivä kului Junibackenissa, jossa koko perhe viihtyi aivan erinomaisesti. Viimeinen tutustumiskohteemme oli Huvikumpu, josta lapset eivät olisi halunneet lähteä pois lainkaan. Sillä harvoinpa sitä saa leikkiä maailman vahvimman tytön kodissa!

Allt om Scrap: Scraplifting Eoghann Mayfair

Few days back I created a list of scrapbooking men. Thank you for all your great comments - I will make some additions to the list very soon!
One of the guys on the list was Eoghann Mayfair, aka Lord of Scrap. Allt om Scrap design team scraplifted some of his beautiful projects, just follow this link to see how the team got inspired by his work.

Joitakin päiviä sitten bloggasin miespuolisista skräppääjistä. Kiitos kaikista mukavista kommenteista - päivitän listaa pikapuoliin!
Yksi listalla mainituista herroista oli Eoghann Mayfair, joka bloggaa nimellä Lord of Scrap. Allt om Scrap:n design team poimi Eoghannin töiden joukosta muutaman inspiraation lähteeksi ja ukin tulkitsi alkuperäistyötä omalla tavallaan. Käy katsomassa tämän linkin takaa, mitä tiimiläiset ovat Eoghannin tyylistä esille nostaneet.

When browsing through his blog I was totally inspired by the combination of bright, bold colors and black texture. On this specific project I just loved the contrast between the simple white leafs and the rich textures.

I started my tag project with stamping and embossing black swirl images on the background. I die-cut a mask for the text as I did not want the texture to cover the background entirely.

Aloitin työstämään tagiani leimaamalla ja kohokuvioimalla taustaan mustia kiehkurakuvioita. Stanssasin paperista maskin, jolla peitin osan tagista, sillä en halunnut täyttää kuvioilla koko taustaa.

Then I colored the backtround with stamping inks. When finished I sprinkled some water on top and dried with a heat gun.

Jatkoin värjäämällä taustan usealla erivärisellä leimamusteella. Lisäsin pintaan tekstuuria roiskimalla leimavärin päälle vettä ja kuivaamalla tagin kuumailmapuhaltimella.

The beautiful leaf stamps (as well as the background images) are from a Basic Grey stamp set. I stamped the leafs on white cardstock, fussy cut them out, and folded the edges for creating bit of a 3d effect.

I finished the background with sanding the tag edges and doodling around the masked area with white and black pens.

Viimeistelin tagin taustan hiomalla reunoja hiekkapaperilla ja rajaamalla maskilla peitetyn alueen mustalla ja valkoisella tussilla.

I finished the tag with adding some paper flowers and stamping and embossing a sentiment text with white embossing powder. Paper flowers are decorated with glitter glue.

Viimeistelin tagin liimaamalla siihen muutamia paperikukkia. Teksti on leimattu ja kohokuvioitu valkoisella kohokuviointijauheella. Paperikukkien terälehdet saivat reunoilleen hieman kimalleliimaa.

Have a bright and colorful day!

Mukavaa värien täyteistä päivää Sinulle!

3rd Eye & Studio 75 week: Real Not Perfect

This will be a truly inspirational week as the design team members of 3rd Eye and 75 Studio are blogging together and mixing and matching products from both companies. I feel so happy for the opportunity to join this event :)

Tätä viikkoa varten 3rd Eyen ja 75 Studion design teamit ovat yhdistäneet voimansa ja luoneet toinen toistaan hienompia töitä molempien yritysten tuotteita käyttäen. Olen erittäin iloinen saadessani osallistua tähän tapahtumaan :)

For this layout  I used the new 75 Studio paper collection Little black dress. I love the vintage shades of cream white and brown and I thought they matched nicely to my vintage colored photos.
The chipboard butterflies were decorated using the matching stamp, yellow embossing powder and water colors. I love how they turned out and will for sure use this technique again for embellishing another project.
For more information please have a look at my 3rd Eye blog post. Make sure to stop by at 75 Studio blog, too, where Gosia has made an amazing art journal project for your inspiration!

Tähän leiskaan käytin ihania vintage-tunnelmaisia kuviopapereita 75 Studion Little black dress -sarjasta.

At the end of the week there will be great candy available in Facebook!

Viikon päätteeksi on Facebookissa upea arvonta, johon kannattaa ehdottomasti osallistua!

Layout for 123 Get Scrappy! DT: A&M

Hi Friends,

Time for a new challenge grid at 1-2-3 Get Scrappy!
I'm sure this one will get your creative juices flowing:

Hei ystävät,

On aika julkaista uusi 1-2-3 Get Scrappy -haasteruudukko!

When going through some old photos I came across this photo from 1980's with my dear grandparents. I scanned the original black & white photo, added some layers and mixed media elements in the background, and finished the page with blue watercolors.
For the layout I used the middle horizontal line: Old book page - Color blue - Stars

When finished I framed the layout and gave it to my mother for Christmas. I hope she likes it (I think she did! :)  )

Background paper - taustakartonki: Sodalicious
Stencil - sabluuna: Prima Marketing - Finnabair. Doily 3
Watercolors - vesivärit: Ecoline
White heart line embellishment - Valkoinen sydänkoriste: Ali Edward's design, cut with Silhouette Cameo

Paperilla DT: Men DO scrapbook!

On Wednesday morning one of my dreams will come true: My friend Minna and I will start our journey to Los Angeles and Anaheim, where we will attend the 2014 CHA. Maybe by the time we switch the plane in London I will start to understand that it all is really true. But hey, unless you dream big you will never get anything truly big.

My time in CHA will start with great excitement as I attend a workshop by Tim Holtz. Can't wait to see him in person!! I think he still is the most famous male scrapbooker and paper crafter who continues to inspire thousands of paper crafters with his ideas, signature projects, and inspiring products.

Then again I thought that if one male scrapbooker has been able to break through in the industry there must be some more out there. However, even after careful googling I was not able to list too many male paper crafters. I myself have come across only one or two male scrapbookers in the workshops I have attended. So I guess they are not many. Or if they are they don't shout about their passion in the social media. I know many men who are really skilled hand crafters. They renovate their old cars. And refurbish furniture. Some even paint, sketch, photograph, or do great things in Photoshop. Others cook and bake.
Drawing a clear line between scrapbooking and other paper related crafts like collage projects is not easy. And not even necessary. I just hope that paper crafting men would have the courage to share their creations. This is not a 'girly' hobby, for sure!

Nevertheless, I hope you will enjoy this list I was able to compile. If you know some more male paper crafters / scrapbookers, I would be happy to update the list with new faces!

Frank introduces himself on his blog as follows:
"I will have to say that my style is an ever-changing art form. I don't think I have a particular style as I am always inspired by everyday events and moments. I tend to create highly dimensional layouts and projects, I think it really sets a different idea as to what can be created with just paper. I use a lot of foam dots and dimensional adhesive as well as plenty of Distress Ink which can be seen in most of my projects. I describe my style as unique because when I see a group of products I can only think about how I will use them uniquely and not ordinarily. The picture in the project at the end of the day is what inspires my work"

Brian Kasstle

Brian Kasstle is an artist and visual/art journaler from Southern California. In his blog he introduces himself as follows:
I was raised in Montana amongst the mountains, trees, streams and rivers which gave me a love of nature.  From my father I received an appreciation for all things vintage, rusty, and old, and to be artistic.  My mother developed my love of nature and gardening.  I studied art at the University of Montana.
I moved to Southern California and I have continued my art studies.  It was not until I found art journaling that my art blossomed and I truly deeply felt I was an artist.  I am passionate about sharing art journaling and helping others to develop as artists.   I love vintage papers, paint and ink.  I live with my partner Ed and three Maine Coon cats, Hank, Tyler Christopher and Melrose. Our cats love to sit upon my journal and feel the love as it pours out of it.

I am primarily a visual journaler.  I am trying to incorporate words more into my pages and spreads.  I tend to think of my journals as “the story of my life.”
