Viime viikonloppu kului mukavissa tunnelmissa Hollannissa: Matkan määränpäänä oli Utrecht ja Art Fusion -tapahtuma!
Tapahtuma alkoi lauantaina, mutta lähdimme Minnan kanssa matkaan jo perjantaiaamuna. Halusimme yhdistää mixed media -viikonloppuun myös päivän kaupunkiloman Amsterdamissa - samalla suunnalla kun kerran oltiin. Riikka liittyi porukkaamme Amsterdamissa, ja kaupunkioppaaksemme saimme ihanan Marsha Valkin. Marshan paikallistuntemuksen avulla lyhyestä lomastamme tuli aivan upea: Kansallismuseon taideaarteita, hyvää ruokaa, shoppailua, kanaaliajelua ja kiertokävelyä!

Last weekend I had the most wonderful time in Holland: We made a long weekend trip to Amsterdam and Utrecht and attended a two-day mixed media event, Art Fusion!
The event started on Saturday morning but Minna and I took already the early Friday morning flight to Amsterdam. Our aim was to start the great weekend with a visit to Amsterdam as none of us had been there before. Riikka flew in to Amsterdam about the same time, and we met her and Marsha Valk at Rijksmuseum at noon. Thanks to our sweet local guide we managed to make our one day city stop truly unforgettable: Art at Rijksmuseum, good food, shopping, canal tour and city walks!



Aamulla matka jatkui junalla Utrechtiin ja asemalta taksilla pieneen utrechtilaiseen taidekouluun, jonne ehdimme juuri ja juuri Nathalie Kalbachin ensimmäisen vuodenaikakanvas-workshopin alkuun. Reilun parinkymmenen hengen ryhmämme oli jaettu kahtia, ja toinen porukka aloitti ensin Nathalien ja toinen Birgit Koopsenin opissa. Kumpikin ryhmä istui omassa luokassaan suuren pöydän ympärillä, mikä hisasi porukan yhteen ja nopeutti toisiin tutustumista. Tilaa ja valoa riitti, ja taidekoulun tiloissa kun oltiin, pöytiä ei tarvinnut ylen määrin varjella pieniltä maalipilkuilta.
Heti alusta lähtien tunsimme olomme lämpimästi tervetulleiksi niin opettajien kuin muiden kurssilaistenkin osalta. Hieno tunnelma jatkui läpi koko viikonlopun, ja uusia ystävyyssuhteita solmittiin monia!

Saturday morning we jumped on the train that took us to Utrecht. There we took the taxi to a small local art school in which the event took place. We got there just in time for Nathalie Kalbach's first class, in which we made a Season canvas using various mixed media techniques. Our group of bit over 20 participants was divided into two groups and both groups had their own large classroom. Other half of the group started the event with Nat and the other half with Birgit Koopsen. The tables were put together and sitting all together around one big table was really nice: You got inspired by other participants, and it did not take us too long until you got acquainted with the person next to you. Tables were spacious and the rooms had enough light, and being located at an art school one had not to be overly careful with protecting the tables from tiny paint spots. The atmosphere was truly friendly and we were warmly welcomed from the first minute of the event. And I'm so very happy about my new friends!


Iltapäivän toinen kurssi oli Birgitin minialbumikurssi, jossa sivuja työstettiin erilaisilla kohokuviointi-, värjäys- ja leimailutekniikoilla. Aikaa oli sopivasti ja kurssi eteni mukavaa tahtia. Paljon ehdittiin, vaikka aivan täysin valmista ei tullutkaan.
Illalla nakkasimme matkatavaramme hotelliin ja lähdimme kymmenen hengen porukalla yhdessä syömään. Päivällisen jälkeen palasimme vielä taidekouluun, ja sain aamulla aloittamani vuodenaikakanvaksen valmiiksi:

In the second workshop by Birgit we made a mini album using various embossing, colouring, and stamping techniques. For a slow scrapper like me there was still enough time, and the pace of the workshop was just right. Even if the techniques were not completely new for me I still think I learned a lot during the afternoon hours.
In the evening we made a quick stop at the hotel, dropped our bags in the room, and headed for a dinner with 8 other Art Fusion participants. After dinner we went back to the art school for a few hours, and I was able to finish my Season canvas:




Sunnuntain ensimmäinen mixed media layout -workshop oli minulle jo sisällöltään tuttu, sillä osallistuin samalle Birgitin kurssille jo IS13-tapahtumassa. Tämä ei kuitenkaan haitannut lainkaan, sillä saatoin nyt perustekniikan sijaan keskittyä väreihin ja tekstuureihin, ja aikaa riitti myös erilaisille kokeiluille.
Iltapäivän viimeisen kurssin piti Nat, ja sain ensikosketuksen pan pasteleihin. Opin myös paljon uutta liquid chalkeihin liittyen - niillä voi tehdä paljon muutakin, kuin vain värjäillä ressattuja paperireunoja!

First workshop on Sunday (layout using mixed media techniques) was already familiar to me from Passionate for Scrapbooking event in Helsinki earlier this year. However, I did not mind this at all, as I was now able to really focus on the colours and textures, and had even a bit time for some experimenting.
The second class was instructed by Nat, and I was so happy to try Pan pastels for the first time. I also learned many new things about liquid chalks - yes, they can be used for much more than just inking the edges of a piece of distressed paper!





Kurssit päättyivät neljältä, ja oli aika hyvästellä uudet ystävämme ja ihanat opettajamme. Nathalien seurasta saimme tosin nauttia hieman pidempään, sillä matkasimme Minna, Nathalie ja minä samaa matkaa Schipolin kentälle. Haukkasimme vielä kentällä jokseenkin erikoisen päivällisen, ja sitten oli aika lähteä kotiin.
Viikonloppu oli mieleenpainuva, ja inspiraatiota ja uusia ideoita riittää taas pitkäksi aikaa. Erityisen mukava oli tavata Marsha ja Birgit, sekä tutustua Nathalieen. Juttu kulki ja yhteinen aika riensi kuin siivillä! Yhteydenpito uusiin ystäviin jatkuu varmasti - nyt jään odottamaan seuraavaa tapaamistamme!

The classes ended at four, and it was time to say goodbye to our new friends and our great teachers. With Nat we were able to postpone the farewell a bit as she took the same train to Schiphol as Minna and I. We even had enough time to have a quick (but very weird :) ) dinner at the airport before heading to the plains and our flights home.
The weekend was unforgettable. My head will be buzzing with new ideas and inspiration for a long time. And it was a true pleasure to meet Marsha and Birgit, and to get to know Nat. I felt we really connected and time just flew! I'm very much hoping to stay in touch with my new friends - while waiting for our next event together!
